BioWorks Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit developed to foster interest in biotech for budding scientists, with age appropriate experiences – giving today’s students a rare chance to experience real-world applied science. BioWorks Lab is an educational biotech program for Redmond area students, to inspire pursuit of the sciences, especially life sciences, and to supplement scientific learning beyond the standard school curriculum. BioWorks Lab provides the opportunity to get hands-on science experience with a PhD Biotech Scientist after school and in summer camp programs.
Founder and CEO, Dr. Shannon Henery, Ph.D., completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2002. After 2 1/2 years as a postdoc at Northwestern University, she began her foray into biotech as a scientist for Sapidyne Instruments, makers of KinExA technology for measuring molecular binding affinity and kinetics. After 2 years with Sapidyne, she spent 3 years as a scientist for Amnis, makers of imaging flow cytometers. These positions involved traveling the world to give technology seminars and instrument demonstrations and trainings in places such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, and all over North America. After a total of 5 years in these small biotech startups, she then took a scientist position for the next 4 years with the global biotech EMD Millipore supporting scientists in hundreds of labs throughout the Northwestern US and Western Canada on a wide range of instruments and products. In 2013 she became the Sr. Scientific Operations Manager with Luminex Corporation supporting a major molecular diagnostic account in the personalized medicine/pharmacogenetics field. She went on to build 2 molecular diagnostic labs (Atlas Genomics and Titan Molecular) in 2015 & 2016, and has now founded BioWorks Lab to bring her 12 years of biotech experience to budding scientists in the Seattle area.
